INTERVIEW : Olly Murs

Catapulted to fame as the runner-up in the 2009 edition of Britain's all conquering The X Factor, Olly Murs has enjoyed a dizzying ride since, bagging a No.1 debut single as well as a platinum-selling debut album and further top five UK success.
We enjoy a relaxed late night chat with Olly (he's in his pyjamas and slippers no less) about his overwhelming journey in the 18 months since lil' Joe McElderry stole his thunder at the final hurdle.

"I started X Factor in September 2009 and we’re now in 2011! It’s been a crazy, crazy time and it's been an amazing 18 months since the show finished," he says. "To be given the chance to put an album out from that show, to have had success and to have people really liking my music is a real pleasure. I’m very honoured, very happy."

Given the increasing criticism directed towards television talent shows and the growing attempts by some to sabotage The X Factor voting in Britain, we ask if Olly was at all hesitant at entering.

"Not really, no," he says with a refreshing honesty. "A lot of artists who have gone on to become massive superstars across the world haven't come from a reality TV show. They’ve come from the ground level and have worked their way through the industry, so you can kind of understand that perspective on it. But for me personally, I think that what these reality TV shows do - and I’m talking from experience - is to give people the most amazing chance. And you have to be really lucky to get a chance from it, but just to get into the final twelve of the X Factor was a massive achievement for me and it’s really changed my life."

Mentored by Simon Cowell as part of the show, Olly was almost eliminated at week seven after performing a version of 'Fastlove' by George Michael. But the judges instead put Jedward to the sword, allowing Olly to fight another day. And as part of the final three, he was given the chance to take the stage alongside two star performers.

"I’d watched Robbie Williams for years, but I now laugh and think about how someone that you’ve watched and idolised for so long all of a sudden becomes one of your mates overnight. We still keep in contact now, so it’s pretty incredible. To get to perform with Sir Paul McCartney on the show was pretty damned cool too. Things like that you just never forget," he says.

He also tells us that he bears no grudge against the competition's eventual winner Joe McElderry.

"Joe was the most consistent throughout the show and he deserved to win the competition," he says. "He was great every week. He was just consistently really good and you couldn’t fault him for that.

"Don’t get me wrong, when I finished the X Factor, of course I was gutted. I was really upset that I lost, because no-one likes to lose anything. But I looked at it a day or two after and thought 'you know what? Finishing second on the biggest TV show in the country isn’t something you can’t not be proud of.' You’ve got to be proud of what an amazing achievement that is. There’s something like a quarter of a million people who apply to go on the X Factor, so to get into the final twelve was pretty amazing," he says.

Now, after being picked up by Simon Cowell's label Syco and his subsequent UK chart success, Olly's turning his attention ever so slightly to Australia, where his debut single 'Please Don't Let Me Go' is being used heavily to promote Australia's No.1 television drama 'Packed To The Rafters'.

"Honestly I can’t believe it. I wrote the song as a summery track and I actually thought about Australia," he says. "I was over there for three months back in 2008. I don’t know the country that well, but I spent four weeks in Sydney overall and travelled up the east coast. It was probably the favourite place I’ve ever been and it really changed me as a person and gave me a better outlook on life, what I could do with it and what I could achieve. It was a place that I always wanted to come back to.

"When the single went to number one here (it beat Katy Perry to the No.1 spot, Olly innocently remarking, "It was nice to be on top of her for at least one week anyway."), I was thinking ‘it would be so cool if Australia was playing it’, knowing full well that your summer season kicks off in December and goes through into January and February. And now with ‘Packed To The Rafters’ wanting to use it in the promo campaign for their new series... It’s all worked out really well, so I’m really proud."

According to Olly, it's also not the last that we'll be hearing from him in the weeks and months ahead, with a local release for his debut album imminent.

"That is on the horizon for Australia definitely. It’s actually going to be really soon," he teases. "I think it’s going to be sooner than you think as well. I’m not 100% sure what’s happening, but I think the movement on it is going to be quite quick. There’s another single that we released over here called ‘Thinking Of Me’ which is going to be out soon as well. It’s another feel-good summer reggae song, so hoping that will be a really cool hit as well.

"The album’s full of different things. It’s got lots of different influences on it, but it’s very me. I co-wrote ten of the tracks on the album and I’m really proud of it, so hopefully when you get hold of it you’ll like it as well," he says.

Over in the UK, meanwhile, his new single 'Heart On My Sleeve', written by UK singer songwriter James Morrison, is set to drop at digital retail early next month, with a 30 date headline tour already locked away and a support slot on the upcoming JLS tour also confirmed.

After a little probing, he also tells us that there'll be another single released in the UK around the time of the tour and that he's already begun work on album No.2.

"I literally went into the studio for the first time today with a couple of writers. My album’s only been out for seven or eight weeks over here, so we haven’t even started the tour yet and we’re only on the third single, but I’ve been straight into the studio today writing new material. We did a really cool track that I’m going to be finishing off tomorrow. So I’ve started again already."

So no rest for the wicked then?

"No, no rest for the wicked," he laughs. "And I like it like that. It was nice that the record label wanted me to crack on with some new stuff and keep it going. And that’s kind of the nature of the beast really - you want to keep the ball rolling because the X Factor really does churn people out quite quickly.

"I want to really try and establish myself in the UK industry quite quickly and to try and have longevity in my career. So if it means making an album every year, I’ll do it."

OLLY'S DEBUT SINGLE 'PLEASE DON'T LET ME GO' IS AVAILABLE DIGITALLY NOW.
OLLY'S SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM IS CURRENTLY UNSCHEDULED.

DIESEL LAUNCHES EP

He's one of Australia's most recognisable musicians and this Friday, he'll release his brand new EP entitled '7 Axes' (pictured above).
The new recordings see Diesel pay homage to some of his favourite 'axemen', with the guitar playing the starring role on each of the tracks, covers of famous recordings by artists from Neil Young to Jimi Hendrix, with the singer-songwriter saying, "We all know that Hendrix was an amazing guitarist but people forget that he was also a great songwriter. I couldn’t be intimidated by his legend and I just had to make the song my own. That was true of all the songs."
To celebrate the release of the new EP, Diesel will hit the road in March for five shows - one each in each of the five major centres, finishing up in Fremantle on Saturday March 26. Tickets are on sale now.

March 11 : Sydney (The Vanguard)
March 12 : Brisbane (Tempo Hotel)
March 13 : Melbourne (East Brunswick Club)
March 25 : Adelaide (Governor Hindmarsh)
March 26 : Fremantle (Fly By Night)

BRITS FASTTRACKED TO [V]

We always think it's a crying shame that free to air television networks in this country don't give the Brit Awards a go - after all, some of the hottest acts on the planet perform there each and every year. And heck, if it's good enough for them to telecast the US awards ceremonies, why not the British ones?
Thank goodness then for Channel [V], who are fast tracking the awards ceremony to Australian audiences, announcing that they'll be telecast on Wednesday February 16 at 7:30pm.
Taking the stage to perform on the night are international megastar Rihanna, Aussie favourites Mumford & Sons, soul king Cee Lo Green, comeback kids Take That, plus Tinie Tempah, Adele, Plan B and Arcade Fire.
Hosted by UK comedian James Corden, the 2011 Brits hit the O2 Arena in London on Tuesday February 15.

KINGS OF LEON TOUR POSTPONED

Kings Of Leon have postponed their forthcoming tour of Australia.
Frontier Touring made the announcement moments ago, saying that due to an injury to drummer Nathan Followill, the band's concert tour will be postponed to November. This will allow Nathan the time to recover from surgery on his torn right labrum and bicep. He expressed his disappointment in a short statement.
"Sorry to all the fans in Australia. My bum wing needs more time to heal but we'll be back later this year. Sorry again."
Dates in South Africa have also been affected.

ZOE HITS RADIO, RETAIL

It's no accident that people are falling in love with Zoe Badwi the world over - after all she's a talented little minx. Her previous single 'Freefallin' was a bonafide top ten smash here in Australia and has been subsequently snapped up for release all over the world, including in the US and UK.
But with 'Freefallin' behind us now in Oz, Zoe's new single 'Accidents Happen' was serviced to radio this morning. Co-written by the amazing Stuart Crichton and Rob Conley and produced by the peeps from TV Rock, its pedigree is pure pop/dance.
The fantastic thing about the new tune is that Neon has rush-released it to retail today, so Zoe fans can buy their very own digital copy of the single as of now (grab it HERE).
The clip is set to drop early next week.

KATE ALEXA : Infatuation

We mentioned a few weeks ago about the return to the Australian pop scene of Kate Alexa. Armed with her cheeky new single 'Infatuation', the singer is already starting to get a little bit of attention in the UK. 'Infatuation' is making itself known on the British club chart, armed with a swag of remixes from the likes of Almighty and Wawa.
She's also signed management in the UK in an attempt to crack ol' Blighty with her new tunes.
The video has finally dropped too - and sees the poppet heading into a tattoo parlour to get herself a little bit of colour. From the window, she begins making up all sorts of little stories in her mind about the passing foot traffic. But what's real and what's not? Check it and see. It's a curious little tune. We're not sure whether we like it or not yet, or whether it'll grow on us after another dozen listens.
'Infatuation' hits iTunes on February 15.

FREE ALPINE

Since being championed by national broadcaster Triple J through its celebrated Unearthed competition a couple of years back, the rollercoaster ride for Melbourne outfit Alpine has been an exhilarating one.
They're signed with Liberation, released their debut EP called 'Zurich' last year, have been touring around the country in both support and headliner capacities and are about to hit the road again for four shows - one each in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide with Boy In A Box in tow.
And to celebrate all this incredible career amazingness, they've decided to give away a remix of their track called 'Heartlove'. Yep, free.
Head along to the band's Soundcloud page to nab it for y'self now by clicking on the image above and catch them at the following shows to say 'thanks' in person.

February 17 : Brisbane (Alhambra Lounge)
February 24 : Sydney (Goodgod Small Club)
February 25 : Melbourne (Corner Hotel)
February 26 : Adelaide (Ed Castle)

CAREY GETS SNOOP-HUNTED

He experienced some pretty big success here in Australia with his single 'Get Shaky', so with big support from Snoop Dogg himself for his new single 'Last Night', it stands to reason that Vicious is understandably excited about the local potential for another chart monster.
The track was serviced to Aussie media late yesterday and on paper, it already looks like being a winner;
• After initially hearing the track, Snoop personally tracked down Ian so that he could guest on the track.
• The video has been post-produced by the same team that worked on James Cameron's mega-movie 'Avatar'.
So now it's up to Aussie radio - will they get behind it and make it another platinum Aussie smash for the US DJ? Let's wait and see.
In the meantime, you'll be able to get your mitts on it digitally on Friday February 04.

IT'S ALL ABOUT LOVE

As if you didn't already know that Valentine's Day was just around the corner... On Friday, Sony Music released this brand new compilation called 'Love Junkie 3', a two disc set featuring some of the tracks that they hope will get you in the mood for some hot lovin' this V Day.
Sure, there are the current chart artists represented (Katy Perry, Adam Lambert, Usher, Ke$ha and even Kylie), but there's also plenty of stuff from days gone by - like Gwen Stefani's glorious 'What You Waiting For?', Maroon 5's 'This Love' and even Guy & Jordin's 'Art Of Love'.
There's also of plenty of pop to get your chops around - think Christina, Jessica, Alexandra, Britney, Kelly and Calvin.
An altogether sweet collection of loved up favourites that's instores now.

LOOKBACK

P!NK : Most Girls

Australians have always had a bit of an affinity for US singer P!nk. Indeed, we were among the first countries to really get behind the singer songwriter, allowing her debut single 'There You Go' to come close to hitting the top spot back in 2000.
But it was her second single 'Most Girls', produced by Babyface, that gave P!nk her first ever number one single - and it was right here in Australia.
The R&B fulled track, that sounded not dissimilar to everything Darkchild was pumping out at the time, also hit the top five in her homeland and was her equal highest charting hit there until 2008's 'So What'.
Look back at the clip - with it's dance routines, bare-chested men and urban beats - and you'll see it's a million miles away from where she is now stylistically. She's successfully morphed into a full-fledged rock chick.
But the one thing that's not changed is P!nk's universal appeal... Her apparent rock-star attitude and her seemingly endless supply of good old-fashioned spunk.

JESSIE J FTG. B.O.B. - Price Tag

Brace yourselves for the a new feel good anthem! Upcoming UK pop sensation Jessie J has just uploaded the video for her brilliant new single 'Price Tag' and if you thought 'Do It Like A Dude' was a little too confronting, chill out, this one's got universal appeal a la 'Where Is The Love?'. Here we see the spunky singer/songwriter drop lines about materialism and our obsession with the superstar front, dressed as a puppet and posing with some classic childhood toys.
'Price Tag' - featuring American rapper B.o.B - is co-written by super producer Dr Luke (Ke$ha) and Claude Kelly (who penned Kelly Clarkson's 'My Life Would Suck Without You'). Jessie J had previously co-written with Dr Luke and Claude Kelly on Miley Cyrus's hit 'Party In The USA'.
'Price Tag' was put up for digital download in the UK today to coincide with the video premiere and fingers crossed, it'll impact Australian radios soon. DL

DOCTOR NABS EMINEM

We love what they've done with the cover image for Dr Dre's latest single 'I Need A Doctor' (left). See, it simply states 'Dr.Dre ftg. Eminem and Skylar Grey', but it's all cleverly disguised within a sign that's (and here's the kicker)... inside a hospital!!
Anyway anyway anyway, before we all get a little too carried away, the track was serviced to radio locally a few minutes ago and it's the second single to be lifted from Dre's new album.
The track features Eminem on the first two verses and Dre rounding up the rear (pardon the pun).
The album 'Detox', although still unscheduled, is due for release sometime in 2011.

SAVAGE SKULLS FTG. ROBYN : Bad Gal

Carli Löf and Måns Glaeser are Swedish production duo Savage Skulls. The pair have been hanging around together since they were teenagers and in recent years, their powers of dance production have got them noticed by none other than Swede pop superstar Robyn. She employed the boys' talents on her 2010 album 'Body Talk Pt.2'.
But now it's payback time - and it seems that this time it's the boys' turn to be noticed in their own right, dragging in Robyn as a featured artist on the new single 'Bad Gal'.
And she's here in the video too.
It all starts off a little underground in the music department - all 'whoops' and percussion, while the clip sees Carli and MÃ¥ns hitting the road for a little scenic cruise. After a little stare-off and car chase, the boys hit the tennis court for a quick game, before heading back out onto the road.
It's very underground and there are two chances of hearing this on commercial radio in Australia (buckley's and none).
But it's Robyn and we just HAD to cover it!

DOKO JOINS THE JOYRIDE

As we count down to the release of one of Sony Music's 'Essentials' packages for Aussie group Bachelor Girl (which is rumoured to include never before heard material from the band's unreleased third album), band frontwoman Tania Doko is forging ahead with a variety of solo singing and writing projects, the latest of which is a remix of 'Joyride' - a track that originally featured in the 2010 movie 'Step Up 3D'.
Tania's fans have been petitioning long and hard for the King Cutter remix's release, and she's thrilled to announce that the track is now available on iTunes HERE.
It was remixed by her She Said Yes bandmate Karl Lewis and features a guest rap by 'Twin Atoms' - an anagram of another Aussie pop singer.
Meanwhile, Tania has co-penned the forthcoming debut single proper for German X Factor winner Edita Abdieski.
Called 'The Key', it was written with Swedish songwriting god Jörgen Elofsson and is the first track to be lifted from Edita's debut album.
Jörgen is the man behind some fab pop songs across the past decade, including Guy Sebastian's 'Angels Brought Me Here', Britney's '(You Drive Me) Crazy', Westlife's 'If I Let You Go', the global megahit 'A Moment Like This' (Leona Lewis and Kelly Clarkson) and songs for Robyn, Same Difference, Geri Halliwell, Steps, Agnes, Celine Dion and The Saturdays among others.
'The Key' is set for release in Germany on March 04.
'Joyride' is available on iTunes globally now.

MTV SET TO LOVE

If you're looking for something to sauce up your Valentine's Day this year, look no further - as MTV has announced they'll be broadcasting the 'Top 100 '80s Love Songs'!
From 3pm on Feb 14, MTV Classic will count them all down, allowing you to sit back on the couch with your loved one, a bottle of your favourite plonk and the nibblies of your choice for a romantic retro rendezvous.
It's all part of the channel's '80s month, where they'll revisit the magical decade and all the pop amazingness that came with it.
Meanwhile, MTV Hits will bring you a wrap up of the Top 50 'Farewell To Summer' on Sunday February 27 from 9am.
In March, they introduce three great music specials on three of today's hottest artists.
'Rihanna : Only Girl On MTV Hits' screens on Sunday March 06 from 1pm. To coincide with Ri-Ri's Aussie tour, this special features all of the greatest musical moments and video clips of Rihanna's career to date.
'OMG It's Usher' screens on Sunday March 20 at 1pm and like the Rihanna special, this one celebrates Usher's greatest hits.
Then on Saturday March 26 at 10am, it's all about Britney Spears with the special 'Britney Is Back' "in line with her new album release".

ALEXIS JORDAN : Good Girl

Let's get our love of Alexis's debut single 'Happiness' out of the way first. It's a corker of a song - with a ripper Deadmau5 sample and a chorus that hits all the right notes. It even made the top ten in our 2010 Singles Of The Year countdown, despite it coming late in the year and our prediction that it would be all over summer radio playlists was right on the money.
BUT, along comes the second single 'Good Girl' (not ready to impact in Australia just yet). It seems the producers may have decided they were on a winner with 'Happiness' and had their ears and eyes on replicating the former's success. For our money, however, it doesn't work anywhere near as well.
The 'hurry hurry hurry' and 'quick quick quick' have been replaced with a repeated 'I know I can be a good good girl' and a slick and innovative video have been superseded by a studio-based production complete with choreography.
There's plenty to like about Alexis and with the right songs, styling and direction, there's no reason that she can't become as big an artist as the Rihannas and Katys of the world.
However, we're sad to say that this all just feels a little formulaic - which is an intense disappointment after such a scintillating debut.

BEP APP

The Black Eyed Peas have launched a brand new app for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, allowing you to go inside the clip for their recent single 'The Time (Dirty Bit)'.
The 'BEP360' app features state of the art digital technology with augmented reality that can transport you to the actual set of the 'The Time' video clip, allowing you to move the camera around 360º within the video.
It's the first little snippet of multimedia goodness to come from will.i.am's new digital technology company 'will.i.apps' and it's all pretty amazing and highly technical.
Cop a look at the clip below to find out more. 'BEP360' is available in the Aussie iTunes App store now.

JESS SET FOR ALBUM

Ascending British pop star and crowning winner of BBC's Sound of 2011 - Jessie J - has just unveiled the artwork and tracklisting for her debut album 'Who You Are'.
The singer, who's currently swagging up Aussie radios with her breakthrough single 'Do It Like A Dude', is gearing up to drop its follow up - 'Price Tag' featuring B.o.B - this Sunday over in the UK.
'Do It Like A Dude' has so far peaked at #2 in the UK and what's interesting to learn is that Jessie originally wrote the track with Rihanna in mind. She told Rap-Up: “At first I never really saw myself doing something like it, but I knew I could. I sent it to my label and I was like, ‘I’m just sending you this before I send it to Rihanna‘s camp to see if you guys like it.’ And they were like, ‘This is your first single. It’s amazing.’”
Check out the final 'Who You Are' album tracklisting below.
The album is set to drop on 28 March over in the UK. Still no word from Universal on a local release date. DL

'FINGER FOR THE FLOODS

They may have decided to go their separate ways after their 2010 'Sunsets' concert series, but Powderfinger is a proud Brisbane band and one with a conscience, and they are therefore releasing a brand new, never before heard single to aid the Queensland flood relief.
The new Powderfinger track is aptly called 'I'm On Your Side' and is being released today, with 100% of all profits (from the band, from their record label and publishers) going directly to the Queensland Premier's flood relief appeal.
The band also released a statement;
"The recent floods that ravaged Queensland have saddened and shocked us all. Our sympathies go out to everyone that has been affected and our condolences to those who have lost loved ones. The Powderfinger bandroom at Newstead went under, along with many of our wonderful neighbours' businesses and we thank everyone who came to lend a hand in the clean up. We know that Fingers fans are extraordinarily generous and we appeal to you to help out one more time by purchasing our song, or donating to one of the suitable funds."
Head to www.powderfinger.com or to GET MUSIC to get your copy today and help the cause.

NEWS WRAP

• There's a whole swag of tracks officially at radio this week - but one that's likely to see plenty of action over the coming weeks is the latest single from US R&B star Usher. Produced by RedOne, 'More' (pictured) is lifted from Usher's latest album 'Raymond V Raymond' and follows up his massive top ten smashes 'OMG' and 'DJ Got Us Falling In Love'.
• Sony's also serviced a radio friendly remix of Train's new single 'Marry Me', as well as 'Unforgiven' - the second single from Joe Cocker's latest album 'Hard Knocks', a tour edition of which is released this Friday.
• Universal, meanwhile, has gone out with 'Just Can't Get Enough' - the second single from the Black Eyed Peas' latest album 'The Beginning'. The album's now gone platinum in Australia and the single 'The Time (Dirty Bit)', which as you're blatantly aware we're not fond of, has now achieved three times platinum status.
• Plenty more pop to get your chops around from Universal including 'Never Gonna Leave This Bed' - the new single from Maroon 5, plus Nelly & Kelly's single 'Gone' (pictured below), and Kris Menace's new single 'Walking On The Moon'.
• Warner has re-serviced Cee Lo Green's 'It's OK' as well as the Foals' new single 'Blue Blood', while EMI has also done the re-service thing with the Roxette track 'She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio)', as well as sending out the aforementioned Operator Please track.
• One track that was due to go to radio this week was the new Zoe Badwi track 'Accidents Happen' (which we brought you the COVER IMAGE to exclusively earlier in the month). However, it's been held over for a week and will now be serviced next Monday.
• Kasey Chambers is celebrating after winning four coveted gongs at the Country Music Awards, held in Tamworth over the weekend. She picked up the single of the year for her track 'Little Bird' as well as the Female Artist Of The Year award. Kasey has just released her brand new single 'Beautiful Mess'.
• For those excitedly awaiting the Aussie release of Jennifer Lopez's new single 'On The Floor', it's currently sitting on Universal's digital release schedule on Monday January 31.
• Speaking of Universal's release schedule, it reveals this week that Aussie outfit Jebediah will release their long overdue new album 'Kosciuszko' on Friday April 15.
• On the UK singles chart this week, Bruno Mars has managed to hold off a charging Adele, maintaining his stranglehold on the No.1 spot with his single 'Grenade'. Adele burst onto the scene at No.2 with her latest single 'Rolling In The Deep'. Diddy's 'Coming Home' at No.4, while Wretch's 'Traktor' parked itself at No.5. Britney is back into the UK top ten at No.6 with 'Hold It Against Me' and there's another debut for Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh (along with Aggro Santos) at No.8.
• On the British albums chart this week, the belated release of Bruno Mars' album 'Doo-Wops And Hooligans' doesn't seem to have slowed the public's appetite any - it debuts at No.1. White Lies' 'Ritual' is in at No.3, while the next highest entry belongs to the Decemberists - all the way down at No.24.

TOURING : Andy Bull / Owl Eyes

When talented Aussie muso Andy Bull goes on tour, we pay attention - 'cause we happen to think that he's an incredibly talented man. And this time around, he's taking Melbourne indy songstress Owl Eyes out on tour with him, for sweet double dates across New South Wales and Victoria from late next month.
We all know Andy from his stunning debut album 'We're Too Young' and his recent EP 'Phantom Pains', while Owl Eyes released her debut EP 'Faces' last year.
You can catch the talented twosome at the following venues;

February 23 : Wollongong (Otis Bar)
February 24 : Cronulla (Brass Monkey)
February 25 : Sydney (UNSW Beergarden)
March 04 : St.Kilda (Pure Pop Records)
March 05 : Melbourne (Toff In Town)

OPERATOR PLEASE : Catapult

Can you believe it? The cute-as-apple-pie gang from Operator Please have decided to bang out an astonishing fifth radio track from their latest album 'Gloves' - and this time around it's the album's opening track that gets the single (and accompanying video) treatment.
The song is at radio this week and the clip premiered online just yesterday, so we thought we'd give it a little look-see.
It's bursting at the seams with simplicity really - plenty of dark, shadowy shots of the band doing what the band does best - playing their instruments, Amandah purring at the camera. There's a glittering cascade, some effective slo-mo action and more than a sprinkling of mood lighting to set the tone.
The track itself? Gossip-esque in parts, and by no means unlikeable.

SHANE REVEALS ALBUM

He's otherwise known as Mister Kasey Chambers, but for others who love their music a little on the country side, a new Shane Nicholson album is a lovely new treat indeed.
His new album 'Bad Machines' will drop at retail in late March and the first single from it (which also happens to be the title track) is now impacting at radio and at digital retail.
To celebrate the impending release of the new LP, Shane' hitting the stage a few times throughout March, with star turns at the Port Fairy Folk Festival (on March 12 and 13), the Moomba Festival in Melbourne (March 11) and at the Brunswick Street Music Festival, also in Melbourne (March 24).
Look for 'Bad Machines' in the shops from Friday March 25.

FEDDE MISSING IN ACTION

It wasn't really until Todd Terry's remix in 1995 that Everything But The Girl's track 'Missing' garnered the mainstream success it deserved. It became a global phenomenon, reaching the top five in the UK, US and here in Australia where it peaked at No.2.
Sixteen years later and the track is back in a big way, thanks to the remix prowess of one Fedde Le Grand. His new reworking of the track has already found support in the clubs of Europe and is now starting to impact here, hitting No.30 on this week's ARIA club chart.
The gang from Neon have snapped it up for a local release and have now made it available to purchase for us down under.
And you can grab it from iTunes HERE.

REM TO RADIO

A big day for fans of R.E.M, with their new single 'Mine Smell Like Honey' (pictured) being serviced to radio earlier this morning.
It's the first single to be lifted from the band's new album 'Collapse Into Now', which sees the band reunited with producer Jacknife Lee, who also produced the band's album 'Accelerate'.
Guest vocalists on the new LP include Peaches, Eddie Vedder and Patti Smith.
'Collapse Into Now' will be released in Australia on Friday March 04.

FREE SHIRIN

We introduced you to UK pop songstress Shirin back in early December, when we revealed that she was being primed to do big things in the United States. At the time, she'd just released her debut single 'Taking You Away' - a track we'd described as a "curious little tune".
Anyway, every Wednesday morning at some ungodly hour here in Australia (5am for the daylight states in the east), Shirin and her producer have been popping online to host a Ustream session for their fans.
During last week's rendezvous, she and her producer Bellringer put together a track called 'The Other Girl' right then and there in front of her amazed audience. And it's this track that she's offering up as a free download right now!
Want it? Need it? A little curious? Download away from HERE.

PAUL MORRELL FTG. MUTYA BUENA : Give Me Love

Ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena said she was in "two minds" about forging ahead in the music biz last year but this latest dance collabo might suggest otherwise. Here the soulful singer teams up with upcoming UK DJ/producer Paul Morrell - who has worked with Sonique and 4Strings - for the stomping and rather pleading club track: 'Give Me Love'. The video sees Ms Mutya rocking several garish shades of lipstick while some vague narrative about unrequited love rolls out against the cityscape. This marks the original Sugababe's first dance music crossover since the brilliant 2007 hit 'Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control)' with Groove Armada, which made #8 in the UK and #24 in Australia.
Aussie producer Kalas is one of a few (Hoxton Whores, TripWire etc) who've contributed remixes to the digital package, which will get a global release on Monday March 14. DL

PNAU! THEY'RE BACK!

It's been four long years since Sydney duo Pnau last graced us with new material (apart from Nick's little side-step into the Empire Of The Sun fold), but the wait is officially over, with Universal Music servicing their brand new single 'The Truth' to Aussie radio late today.
The track is the first to be lifted from the band's forthcoming album 'Soft Universe', due for release "later in 2011" and a video is set to make it's debut following the band's appearances at the Big Day Out festivals around the country.

LOOKBACK

CANDICE ALLEY : Falling

She's probably now better known as the wife of Australian swimming star Grant Hackett, but when she burst onto the Australian pop scene back in 2003 with her debut single 'Falling', Candice Alley was being touted as being one of Australia's hottest new talents. Bagging an ARIA nod for best new talent that year, 'Falling' was the singer's biggest hit - a super-cool summery track that was highlighted by Candice's sublime smokey vocals. It hit the top ten here and two years ago was given the remix treatment by The Attic and Fred Falke for an assault on the US club scene where it eventually cracked the top 40.
As for the clip? Poor Candice in her pokey studio apartment - she's got possibly one of the worst cases of rising damp ever recorded... Or could it just be that she left the bath running a little too long?
